The Process: Choosing A Builder

Building a custom home is a unique and involved process. So much goes in to each step and phase of construction that we could spend hours talking about it... or even write a whole blog series. So let’s do it!

While each project’s process is unique, there are a few essential steps common to every build. For this first installment of our new blog series, we’re diving head first into choosing a builder.

Why select a builder first? To make your life easier! There’s nothing wrong with choosing an architect, designer, or lot before you find a builder. But at the end of the day, having your builder involved from start to finish allows them to streamline the process for you.

Your builder can assist in finding a lot and assembling your home-building dream team through their professional connections and attention to your style, wants and needs, and budget. In fact, builders are the keepers of your budget, so involving them from the beginning allows them to inform your selection decisions every step of the way.

Using Your Resources

So you’ve decided to look for a builder. Where should you start? Like any big life decision, doing your research is key. Fortunately, the online resources are practically endless.

One site we absolutely love is Their “Find Professionals” feature allows you to easily search and compare home builders in your area. It’s a great place to start—each profile includes project pictures, contact information, and a link to the builder’s own website. The annual Luxe Interiors & Design Gold List is another resource that releases lists of top home building professionals in states including Texas, New York, California, Arizona, and more.

We also recommend looking for resources specific to the area you’re planning to build in. For anyone planning to build in Dallas, an awesome resource is D Home’s annual Best Builders list.

And a new resource we’re loving is this Dallas Architects website listing top companies in categories including design-build firms and interior designers!

Once you’ve narrowed down your list based on style and price point, it’s time for some interviews.

Finding A Fit

We always tell our potential clients that the best first step in interviewing home builders is to meet them in person so see if your style, personality, and price point are a fit.

We recommend coming prepared with questions, examples of your style, and a list of wants and needs. And remember, these initial meetings are a builder’s chance to “woo” you and explain what sets them apart from the competition! You should leave with a clear idea of the builder’s strengths and specializations, and an understanding of how they operate.

If the initial meeting goes well, be sure to ask for references, a tour of some of the builder’s homes, or both. Getting in touch with a builder’s recent clients is your chance to get candid feedback from the best possible sources.
