Building with a Fun Flair

When it comes to building a custom home, it can be hard to nail down your style and jump into making decisions right away. In the latest episode of our extended video series on YouTube, Jamie Charles, homeowner of our Beverly project, breaks down how she identified her unique, modern, yet cozy home style.

  1. Do your research: Before you pick a builder or a lot for your new home, understand yours wants and needs through research. Ask your family what’s important to them? Once you’ve done this research, you’ll be able to better communicate to your builder what your non-negotiables are.
  2. Choose inspiration that’s unique to your family: For the Charles family, this meant incorporating styles from all the places they’ve lived before. You’ll also notice an incredible art collection displayed throughout the home. The majority of these pieces have been collected as custom pieces from vacations. Having custom pieces connects you to your home.                                                                                                                                                                                {Coats Homes shot by Nathan Schroder}
  3. Don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone: Beverly is one of our most featured and asked about projects because its daring and different, yet still projects the feeling of home. For Jamie, designing this home was a challenge because it was much more modern than her previous homes, but that’s where your designer and architect comes in. While we may know what we want, we don’t always know how to get there.
  4. Ask how you will use your space: Do you travel a lot not need a lot of space? Are you an entertaining family? Will you frequently host out of town guests? Asking the question of how you will be using your space can help determine how your home needs to be designed. The Charles family loves to entertain, therefore, we designed their home to have a certain flow that kept entertaining spaces easily accessible and kept private spaces out of the way.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              {Coats Homes shot by Nathan Schroder}
